Designed and built by PinPin Studio, Kraken’s Lair stood finished in the ICEHOTEL, in the beginning of December 2011.
It’s the story of an ancient creature lurking in the deeps of the ocean, waiting for its next pray, The Kraken. The tales originates from the north of Norway and Iceland, where they have been told for centuries by fishermen and sailors. They have all told about the same story, about an enormous, octopus like monster pulling down big ships and boats to the bottom of the sea.
In 1830, the English poet Alfred Tennyson wrote:
Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumber’d and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.
Kraken’s Lair was built in about 200 hours. It was hard work, I can tell you and we were very unfortunate with the wether conditions during the first week. We made it through though and we were very satisfied with the feeling of the room. Here is a video of how the suite was constructed. Have a look!
